What is Digital Marketing ?
In simple words Digital Marketing is the promotion of product and services through the digital platform. These include social media, email, mobile apps, search engines and websites. Browsing through the internet in our daily lives we are exposed to a number of internet marketing activities. Be it sponsored posts on social media sites, advertisements in between videos that we watch on Youtube or blog posts, at our every move on the internet there are high chances of companies trying to catch our attention through internet marketing.
Marketing has really transformed with the advent of technology and digital is the future of all marketing and promotion based activities. Conventional marketing techniques were based on newspaper advertisements, radio, televisions, etc. With the penetration of internet reaching in remotest corners of our villages, a sizeable creation of marketing activities of companies have been directed on the digital platform.
The World after Digital
We are in an era when the buyer and the seller can be seated in two different corners of the world, yet they could transact without much hassle. Owing to this potential of digital marketing to reach out to a wider and a diverse group of audience, more and more organisations are allocating lump sum amounts for social media marketing strategies.
Digital Marketing offers the unique advantage of conversion right at the time of intended promotion, something which was missing in the traditional forms of advertisements. For example, a user might be watching a video on Youtube and an advertisement of a pendrive in between the video might motivate him to buy the gadget right away. Precisely, the reason why startups with small budgets and multinational corporations alike, are spending more on the digital platforms. This makes it a very lucrative industry to work in. The industry is in search of experts who understand the internet and act as a catalyst to boost their presence.
(Startups who built businesses using Digital Platforms)
There are many companies that were just an idea in a drawing room a decade ago but have now gone on to become an elephant in their field. All of these companies owe their success to the rise of digital marketing.
It was started by Mark Zuckerberg, founder and current Chairman and CEO of Facebook, as a communication platform for students at the Harvard College. Now it has become one of the leading and most popular social networking sites. Today around 47 per cent of internet users are on Facebook and its revenue exceeds $40 billion. All thanks to internet and yes digital marketing!
Zomato is an internet restaurant search and discovery giant. What began as a small city internet restaurant look up service, now operates in close to 23 countries. In just a decade it has created fanfare for its services both in the domestic and international markets. This Indian startup has caught the eye of big international investors. Recently, it bagged another round of overseas funding, which eventually pegged its net worth to $1.1 billion.
Uber is a ride hailing app which has made booking a cab, convenient and very easy. It is widely used in developing countries where Uber’s operations and demand is growing day by day. In just over a decade of starting up it has 40 million monthly users and revenue exceeding $ 20 billion.
(Current scene of Demand & Supply in the Digital Market)
Currently 90 % of Indian companies have allocated about 15% of their earnings on the digital marketing. With the government’s ambitious plan to establish high speed broadband connection in all 2.5 lakh gram panchayats in the country, the growth is bound to pick up pace. This would mean companies need content creators, SEO specialists and email marketing experts. It is aligning with this vision of Digital India that we started to offer professional courses in Kolkata.
Another big reason for its growth is the cost effectiveness it offers. The cost to reach to an audience of 2000 through the traditional promotion medium (newspapers, radio, television etc.) varies from $200-900. Contrast this with $50-75, all that a company would need to spend to reach out to the same number of people if it has a digital marketing strategy in place. No wonder one would prefer to choose the latter.
